to Start Your Own Herb Garden and How Herb Markers Are Useful
Whether you own a little backyard or balcony, it’s very easy to start your own herb garden. Read on to know the details.
Generally people hesitate to establish a garden as they find planting herbs difficult. However, starting a herb garden can be very simple with the right guidance and proper planning. City living doesn’t allow a lot of space, but you can definitely grow herbs in your balcony. Growing herbs is a great activity as they don’t need much space and can be grown in a small container. Once you have picked up the right herb, you can start without any hurdles. Also, use a plant marker to write the name of the herb, so that you do not get confused.
Here are some tips to get started:
Choose your herbs wisely: Preferably one must select herb varieties that are hardy. For example, choose basil, mint, bay, rosemary, chives and dill as these can be used frequently. Fresh herbs are great for garnishing and also, they add bold flavour in your dish. Their aromatic qualities work very well with roasted food. But with so many herbs, you might get confused; therefore, to avoid the confusion use a herb marker.
Choose a location:Light is key to grow healthy plants and same goes with herbs. Place your pots beneath the window, so that the herb can receive maximum sunlight. You can move pots occasionally as per the season and availability of sunlight.
Go for the correct container: Choose a pot with drains and saucers. In case of sealed pots, put some rocks at the base and place few minerals like coal into the soil in order to enable the drainage.
Proper watering and fertilizing:Don’t get impulsive with herbs, sometimes plants die due to excessive attention. Make a calendar and keep a record of when you last watered you plant and when next you need to water them.
Harvest on-time: Harvest only when once herbs have matured and make sure you don’t harvest more than one third of the herbs at a time. Before you harvest again, let one third grow back. To add vibrant flavour in the dish, use all flowers as soon as they appear.
Use correct garden herb markers: The primary use of labels and markers is to avoid mix and match and to identify saplings easily. Garden markers come in different shapes and sizes, therefore, make sure you use the correct one for herbs. Use a marker that compliments the container and goes perfectly with the size of the plant.
So, next time you will not have to buy a bunch of parsley or basil for any single recipe, just snip off some from your own herb garden and enjoy your dish.
